College graduation weekends are emotional. One minute you’re taking first-day-of-kindergarten photos, and the next you’re sitting in the Texas heat watching your daughter walk across a stage at the University of Texas with a journalism degree. For Eden’s graduation weekend, Noah, Jonah, and I loaded up the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Summit and road-tripped from just outside Dallas to Austin. What I expected was a comfortable family SUV. What I got was a luxury road-trip machine that made me question why every vehicle doesn’t come with massaging seats.

And somehow, despite hauling three people, luggage, and enough graduation-related items to stock a small gift shop, we made the entire round trip on a single tank of gas. I still find that mildly suspicious, but considering the gas prices, I cannot complain!

The Grand Cherokee L Summit represents the luxury side of the Jeep brand, and it becomes obvious the moment you step inside. Our test vehicle featured Silver Zynith paint, black exterior accents, and gorgeous Palermo leather seating. The cabin feels upscale, modern, and thoughtfully designed without trying too hard. Jeep has managed to create an interior that feels premium.

The 12.3-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard, while ambient lighting and high-quality materials make the cabin feel more expensive than many competitors in the segment. At nearly $73,000 as equipped, it should feel luxurious. Thankfully, it does.

The Seats Deserve Their Own Award

Let’s discuss the true MVPs of this trip: the massaging, heated, and ventilated front seats. Austin decided to remind everyone that May in Texas is already full-blown summer heat. It was hot. It was humid. My hair gave up.

The ventilated seats kept me from sticking to the leather, while the massage function turned hours on I-35 into something that almost felt relaxing. I say “almost” because no amount of technology can eliminate the chaos that is I-35 traffic. Mainly cause Waco will not stop redoing the roads, making me wonder if, at this point, if it is a money-laundering scheme.

Still, it’s hard to overstate how much these features improve a road trip. By the time we arrived in Austin, I felt surprisingly fresh instead of feeling like I’d spent three hours wrestling a lawn mower. Granted, I made Noah drive so I could work. The heated and ventilated second-row seats meant that Jonah was equally comfortable, which dramatically reduced complaints. Parents know that’s worth its weight in gold.

Hands-Free Driving Assist Feels Like the Future

The feature that generated the most conversation during our drive was Jeep’s Hands-Free Active Driving Assist. When conditions are right, and you’re on approved highways, the system can handle steering, acceleration, and braking while keeping the vehicle centered in its lane.

Now before anyone gets excited, this is not a self-driving vehicle. You must remain attentive and ready to take over. When the car sees that you are not looking at the road, it warns you by vibrating the driver’s seat. It will turn off if it thinks you are not watching the road in front of you.

That said, it significantly reduces driver fatigue. The first time I activated it, I found myself doing what every driver does when testing this technology: staring at the steering wheel like it was performing magic tricks.

The system felt smooth, confident, and natural. Rather than constantly making abrupt corrections, it maintained a steady course and handled highway driving with impressive composure. For anyone who regularly tackles long-distance drives, this feature alone may justify moving-up to the Summit trim.

Acceleration was smooth, merging onto highways was effortless, and passing slower vehicles required very little planning. The turbocharged engine delivers plenty of torque where you need it most, and the transmission does an excellent job staying in the right gear. Even with passengers and luggage onboard, the Grand Cherokee L never felt strained.

Those numbers don’t necessarily jump off the page, but real-world performance impressed me. Expansion joints, rough pavement, and uneven surfaces are handled so smoothly that passengers may not even notice them. The Grand Cherokee L feels planted and composed at highway speeds while remaining easy to maneuver around town. It strikes an excellent balance between comfort and control.

No, it isn’t sporty. But that’s not the mission. The mission is transporting people comfortably, quietly, and confidently, and the Summit excels at all three.

Road Trip Technology Done Right

One thing Jeep got right is that technology enhances the experience without making you feel like you need a computer science degree to operate the vehicle. Not that I would ever get pissed off and yell at the car when it’s too complicated………

The massive 12.3-inch touchscreen is responsive and easy to navigate. Wireless Apple CarPlay connected instantly and remained reliable throughout the trip. The wireless charging pad kept devices powered, while USB ports throughout all three rows prevented the usual arguments about whose phone deserved charging priority.

The 19-speaker McIntosh audio system deserves a standing ovation. Whether we were listening to graduation playlists, podcasts, or the boys arguing over music choices, everything sounded crystal clear.

There’s also a front passenger display that allows the co-pilot to interact with navigation and entertainment features. It’s one of those things you don’t think you need until you use it. If Noah had known ahead of time, he probably would have brought a gaming system to use with it since there’s an HDMI plug-in. Granted that means we wouldn’t have been able to talk, so I am glad he didn’t know!

The available rear entertainment system includes dual 10.1-inch screens with built-in Amazon Fire TV capability. While my kids are older now, I can immediately see how valuable this would be for families traveling with younger children. Jonah had final exams the week after Eden’s graduation so he didn’t use the tvs and instead turned the second row into his study space!

Safety and Driver Assistance

As a mom, I appreciate safety technology that quietly helps rather than constantly yelling at me. You may recall my Prius video and how much I hate it when the car just beeps and beeps and beeps. Jeep loaded the Summit with enough safety technology to make even the most cautious parent happy without making it literally nag you.

Features include adaptive cruise control, active lane management assistance, blind-spot monitoring, intersection collision assistance, traffic sign recognition, a surround-view camera system, drowsy driver detection, and rear-seat reminders.

The adaptive cruise control made highway driving noticeably less tiring, while the surround-view camera system turned parking around campus and crowded graduation venues into a non-event. It was all paralell parking so tht bird’s eye view was awesome.

Our vehicle also included a head-up display and night vision system capable of detecting pedestrians and animals in low-light conditions. Hopefully you’ll never need it, but it’s reassuring to know it’s there.

Is the Third Row Actually Usable?

Unlike many SUVs where the third row appears designed exclusively for gymnasts under age ten, the Grand Cherokee L’s third row is tight but still functional.

With seating for up to seven passengers and power-folding third-row seats, it’s flexible enough for family vacations, college move-in days, sports tournaments, and all the other situations where parents suddenly become part-time logistics managers.

What Women Will Love

If you’re shopping for a large SUV, here’s who I think will love the Grand Cherokee L Summit:

This isn’t competing with entry-level three-row SUVs. It’s competing with premium offerings from brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Acura, and Lexus while still maintaining Jeep’s reputation for capability. They offer this same vehicle in other trim levels at lower prices.

For buyers looking for a luxurious family SUV that can comfortably handle road trips, daily driving, and occasional adventures, the value proposition is stronger than you might expect.

Final Thoughts

The 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Summit surprised me. I expected a nice family SUV. What I got was a luxury road-trip companion that handled graduation weekend with ease, kept everyone comfortable, and somehow stretched a tank of gas farther than I thought possible.

Most importantly, after several hours on Texas highways, I climbed out feeling refreshed instead of exhausted. And honestly, any vehicle that can make I-35 feel even slightly less painful deserves serious consideration.
