2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Summit Obsidian 4×4 Review

There are some cars you drive and think, โ€œWell, that was nice.โ€ Then there are cars you drive and immediately start mentally rearranging your life to figure out how to get one into your driveway. The 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Summit Obsidian 4×4 was very much the second kind for me. I spent a day in Austin with Jeep, drove out to a ranch, and got a hands-on look at what this 3rd-row luxury SUV can do. My drive partner was Scotty from A Girls Guide to Cars, which meant I had someone equally interested in the details and probably equally likely to get excited about a really good cupholder.

I also had a chance to visit my daughter while I was in Austin, and that was when the Grand Wagoneer really won me over. I parallel parked it. Easily. In Austin. A city where I do not know my way around particularly well and where parking can sometimes feel like an Olympic event with no medals and way more people judging you. The combination of cameras, including the 360-degree birdโ€™s-eye view, made maneuvering this enormous SUV surprisingly easy.

The 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Is Still a Big Dealโ€”But Now Thereโ€™s a Big Price Difference

The first thing you need to know about the 2026 Grand Wagoneer is that Jeep has made a significant pricing change. The Grand Wagoneer is now the brandโ€™s luxury flagship, while the Wagoneer nameplate has moved to Jeepโ€™s electric lineup. The 2026 Grand Wagoneer starts at $63,995, and the Summit Obsidian starts at $94,310. That is a substantial difference from the previous model year, and it is worth looking again if you had previously decided the Grand Wagoneer was too expensive.

The Summit Obsidian is the trim I drove, and it is a very different proposition from a basic family SUV. It is a full-size luxury SUV with a 420-horsepower 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six engine, four-wheel drive, and a long list of standard features. The engine produces 468 lb-ft of torque, and Jeep says the Grand Wagoneer can tow up to 10,000 pounds when properly equipped.

It Is Huge, but It Does Not Feel Like a Chore to Drive

I have driven a lot of large SUVs, and some of them feel like you are piloting a small building. The Grand Wagoneer is definitely large, but it has a much more manageable feel than you might expect. The ride height gives you a commanding view of the road, and the steering and camera system make it easier to place the vehicle than I anticipated. I was comfortable driving it through Austin and out to the ranch, and I never felt like I was wrestling with the size of the SUV.

The Grand Wagoneer also has the kind of power that makes sense for a vehicle this large. The 420-horsepower engine is more than enough for everyday driving, highway trips, and getting a full load of passengers moving without drama. I liked that the power was there when I needed it, but the vehicle did not feel like it was constantly trying to prove something.

The Cameras Are a Game Changer for Parking

The parking experience was one of my favorite things about the Grand Wagoneer. It has a lot of cameras, including a 360-degree birdโ€™s-eye view, and I found that incredibly useful in a vehicle this large. It is one thing to read that a vehicle has a surround-view camera system; it is another thing to actually use it while parallel parking and think, โ€œOh, I can do this.โ€

The Running Boards Are a Small Detail That Makes a Big Difference

One of the things I appreciated most was how the power running boards work. When I clicked to unlock the vehicle, the mirrors folded out, and the running boards extended. That is a small detail, but it is exactly the kind of thing that makes a large SUV more family-friendly. If you have small children, getting in and out of a tall vehicle can be a production, and having the running boards automatically extend makes the process much easier.

The Grand Wagoneer is also spacious enough that you do not feel like you are climbing into a vehicle and then immediately trying to figure out where everyoneโ€™s knees are supposed to go. The front seats are comfortable, the second row has plenty of room, and the third row is genuinely usable. I have spent enough time in third-row SUVs to know that โ€œseats sevenโ€ does not always mean โ€œseven people will be happy.โ€ This one is much closer to the latter.

The Third Row Is Actually Comfortable

The third row was one of the biggest surprises for me. I had plenty of headroom and legroom, and I did not feel cramped sitting in the back. That is important because a third row is only useful if people can actually sit there without looking like they are being punished for something. The Grand Wagoneerโ€™s third row is roomy enough that adults can sit back there, and that makes a big difference for families who regularly carry older kids or extra passengers.

The second row also has plenty of power outlets and its own climate controls, which is another feature I appreciated. Everyone can have their own little zone, and that makes long drives much more comfortable. The third row also has its own power and sunroof, which is a nice touch because the people in the back do not feel like they have been sent to a separate country.

The Interior Is Loaded with Technology

The Grand Wagoneer has a lot of screensโ€”seven, depending on how you count themโ€”and it is one of those vehicles where you can spend a little time just discovering all the things it can do. The front display is fantastic, and the heads-up display was one of my favorite features. It can show navigation information, the speed limit, and other important driving information right in your line of sight.

The heads-up display was especially useful for me in Austin because I was driving in an unfamiliar city. I did not have to keep looking down at the navigation screen to figure out where I was supposed to go. It was right there in front of me, which made the whole experience feel easier and less distracting.

The rear-seat entertainment screens are another family-friendly feature. The second-row passengers can have their own screens, which is great for keeping kids entertained on road trips. There is also a front passenger display, so the person sitting next to you can have their own screen without taking over the driverโ€™s screen.

Safety Features Are Everywhere

The Grand Wagoneer is loaded with safety features, and that is one of the things I would want to point out to anyone considering it for a family vehicle. The safety technology includes lane keep assist, pre-collision braking, rear pedestrian alert, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and more. Jeep says the Grand Wagoneer has more than 170 standard and available safety and security features.

I also appreciated that the vehicle has features that make it easier to keep an eye on what is happening around you. The cameras and driver-assistance systems are not a replacement for paying attention, but they are helpful tools that make driving a large SUV more manageable. For families, that is a meaningful benefit.

The Interior Is More Spacious Than My Minivan

I drove a minivan for 17 years, so I have a pretty good understanding of what it means to have a vehicle that is genuinely spacious. The Grand Wagoneer surprised me because it felt even more spacious than the minivan I drove for all those years. That is saying something, because minivans are not exactly known for being stingy with legroom.

The ride height is also much better than a minivan. You sit up higher, you have a better view of the road, and the whole vehicle feels more like a luxury SUV than a family shuttle. I liked that combination of space, comfort, and the ability to get out on the road and enjoy driving.

The Summit Obsidian Is a Luxury SUV That Happens to Be Family-Friendly

The Summit Obsidian has the kind of features you would expect in a luxury SUV, including massaging front seats, premium leather, and a very comfortable interior. The seats are a big part of the experience, and I could see how the massaging seats would be a welcome feature on a long road trip.

The vehicle also has off-road technology, which makes sense for a Jeep. Sadly, I did not spend the day doing serious off-roading, but I did off-road a little bit. I liked knowing that the Grand Wagoneer is not just a luxury vehicle that happens to have a Jeep badge. It has the capability to get you out to a ranch or down a rougher road without making you feel like you are doing something the vehicle was never intended to do.

My Verdict: I Loved It

I really loved the 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Summit Obsidian 4×4. It is big, comfortable, powerful, and packed with features that make sense for families. The 3rd row is genuinely usable, the cameras make parking much easier, the running boards make getting in and out more convenient, and the heads-up display is a fantastic feature for driving in unfamiliar places.

The biggest thing I would tell someone considering it is this: if you previously looked at the Grand Wagoneer and decided it was too expensive, look again. The 2026 model year has a much lower starting price than before, and Jeep has kept a lot of the luxury features that made the Grand Wagoneer appealing in the first place. It is still a big, expensive SUV, but it is a very compelling option if you want something that can handle family life, road trips, and a little adventure without feeling like you are driving a giant compromise.
