Once again, Blue Star Museums is offering free admission to the nation’s service members, including National Guard and Reserve, and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Each year we go to a few of these and they are always excellent. I’m excited because Portland had not really had anyone participate and this year at least four Portland museums are participating.
This year, more than 2,000 museums in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and American Samoa are taking part in the program.
This year’s Blue Star Museums represent not just fine arts museums, but also science museums, history museums, nature centers, and dozens of children’s museums. Among this year’s new participants are the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville, Florida, the Duluth Children’s Museum in Minnesota, the Space Station Museum in Novato, California, and the Lyon Arboretum at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa.
A full list of participating museums is available at www.arts.gov/bluestarmuseums.

It almost sounds too good to be true but it isn’t! Through the Blue Star Museums initiative, our heroes in the military can get free admission to some of our country’s most treasured places. We encourage everyone to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity and support the brave men and women who fight for our freedom and keep us safe. And if you happen to visit any of these museums give yourself a pat on the back as you are giving back to those who gave so much. Have fun exploring and learning about our great nation!
