When is the last time you took your kids to the forest?
We feel extremely lucky to be surrounded by forest here in Portland, Oregon. In fact we just found a new place to go fishing out in the woods not far from where we live. It is truly amazing sometimes to go on a 12 mile drive and end up in a quite, pristine area like this beach. I mean in 15 minutes we left the hustle and bustle behind us and are now having quality one on one time with our kids.
Another activity we enjoy is hiking with our kids. We often head out to another forest area, the scenic Columbia Gorge and hike the waterfalls. There are tons and tons of hiking trails in this area, including hiking trails for kids.
Our family has found that it is important to make time to unplug and be in nature with your kids. It is an experience that all kids will enjoy and if you are not careful, your kids will stay plugged in on some level all the time. Taking them to discover the forest where they get no Internet service can be fun for the parents to watch too!
If you are unsure of where to go near you, then you will love the DiscoverTheForest.org website. It features an interactive map tool that enables users to search for nearby forests and parks. On their site you can filter by zip code and find activities that interest you. DiscoverTheForest.org also offers free outdoor activities including printables.
This Youtube video really catches what it is all about, those unique. timeless experiences that any kids would enjoy.
Now remember before you go hiking, especially in a dense forest like what we have up in the Pacific Northwest you should know how to us a compass. Here is a quick guide that will show you how to use a map compass.
