Omni La Costa Resort & Spa recently completed a multi-million dollar renovation in the spring of 2024 and offers a compelling mix of family activities and adult amenities across 400 acres. In this review, I’ll walk you through exactly what this resort delivers, what it costs, and whether it’s worth booking for your Carlsbad getaway.

WHAT MAKES OMNI LA COSTA DIFFERENT

Set within a captivating 400-acre Spanish Mission-style village, Omni La Costa Resort & Spa is the perfect place to enjoy all that Southern California has to offer. This place operates more like a self-contained vacation destination than a typical hotel where you just sleep between beach trips.

Located near San Diego – between downtown Carlsbad and Encinitas, California – the resort is a short drive from the shore. The resort sits about 30 miles north of downtown San Diego, which puts you close enough to hit Legoland, the beaches, and other North County attractions without dealing with the chaos of staying right in the middle of everything.

What Sets It Apart

Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, which, after starting life as a spa and golf retreat in the ’60s, has evolved into one of the best family getaways on the West Coast. The resort has maintained its wellness heritage while adding serious family appeal. This Omni hotel wows guests with more than 500 recently renovated guest rooms, which are refreshed with light and airy touches, splashes of blue accents, marble bathrooms, and spacious terraces.

The Spanish Colonial architecture and lush landscaping create an atmosphere that feels more Mediterranean villa than standard California resort. You will notice tiled fountains, tropical blooms, and manicured grounds that actually look like someone cares about them. This matters when you are spending several days on property and want to feel like you are somewhere special.

Guests at this Omni resort have eight swimming pools to choose from, including the Edge Adult Pool with an adjacent bar and private cabanas, a serene Spa Courtyard Pool and the Sandy Beach Family Pool. Having this many pool options means you can actually find space and the right vibe for whatever mood you are in.

Family Pools Worth Your Time

The family pool area just outside Kidtopia is fantastic, with a pair of 100-foot waterslides and a cute splash pad. This is where your kids will want to spend most of their time. The Splash Landing pools feature two 100-foot waterslides, a toddler slide and an aquatic play area. The height requirement for the big slides is 48 inches, so keep that in mind if you have younger kids who might be disappointed.

Another pool nearby has a sandy beach entrance, which is perfect for little ones who want to build sandcastles but are not quite ready for the ocean. The sandy bottom gives them that beach experience without the waves and unpredictability of the actual beach a few miles away.

My favorite things were how many hot tubs there were across the property! I hate it when a hotel has just a pool and no hot tub. This place had almost just as many hot tubs as they did pools.

Adult Escapes

If you want peace and quiet, visit the adults-only Edge Pool. This is your sanctuary when you need a break from the kid chaos. The pool has an adjacent bar and you can rent private cabanas if you want to make a whole day of it.

There’s a small, tranquil pool at the spa that you can access either with a day pass or by booking a treatment. This spa courtyard pool is tucked away and perfect when you want total serenity. The Garden Pools are located in a lush landscape, while the Villa Pool is available for villa guests and offers a private Jacuzzi.

KIDTOPIA KIDS CLUB

Kidtopia is a 6,000-square-foot, counselor-supervised nursery and kids’ club for kids six months to three years, and a play center for kids ages four to 12. This is one of the biggest draws for families and a major reason parents choose this resort over others in the area.

The facility includes some genuinely cool features that keep kids engaged. There is a 600-gallon saltwater aquarium of exotic fish, computer stations, a light floor, a seven-foot treehouse, and a movie lounge. The play area features soft climbable furniture, small slides, and several activity stations.

The Cost Breakdown

Rates start at $16 per hour, $50 per half day (9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.) or $80 per full day (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Half- and full-day rates include lunch, and there is a 10 percent discount for siblings on half- and full-day sessions. Children under 2 years of age may stay in Kidtopia for a maximum of two hours.

Their Wednesday through Saturday Night Camp program (bathroom independent ages 3 and up) is ideal for parents looking for a romantic evening for two. On Friday and Saturday nights, the Kidtopia Night Camp offers evening group childcare for potty-trained 3 to 12 -year-olds during the hours of 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. from $55, including dinner.

It begins at check-in with an Omni Kids Crew activity backpack and doesn’t let up until check-out. Kids also receive an Omni Kids Crew Backpack upon check in which includes an activity book with stickers, crayons, card games, binoculars, and more making little ones feel pretty special. Vibz Teenspace is a club that caters to a slightly more mature gang — tweens and teens ages 10 and up can play computers, videogames, foosball, ping pong and other games in the 6,000-square-foot lounge. One bedroom has two queen beds, and the other has one king bed. The two en-suites have dual-sink vanities, an oversized soaking tub, and a separate shower. These suites are extremely popular with families who want a living area completely closed off from the bedroom as they are also some of the most reasonably priced suites in town. Some of these are located near the family pool.

Villa Options

The resort also offers villas with full kitchens and laundry facilities. These are privately owned but held to uniform standards, so there’s no guesswork about the decor or amenities. Villas are those for who would like highly personalized experiences as the villas have spacious bedrooms, gas fireplaces, stainless steel appliances, and oversize soaking tubs.

Villas make sense if you are staying more than a few days or have a larger family that needs multiple bedrooms. The full kitchens let you save money on meals, which helps offset the higher nightly rate. For a fresh take on California cuisine, Bob’s Steak & Chop House serves high-quality steaks and regional seafood paired with an extensive wine list. Bar Traza offers Mediterranean shared plates created using local, organic ingredients; patrons can also sip on cocktails from the Flavor Origins menu. Located on-site, Bob’s Steak & Chop House is a traditional American prime steak house, offering a combination of simple elegance, lively atmosphere, drinks, fine wines, and large cuts of the finest prime steaks, chops and seafood.

Best Spots for Families

The Bistro offers plated Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Dessert all created with regional sustainable ingredients including herbs grown on site. The Marketplace has a ton of grab & go options like sandwiches, wraps, homemade pizzas, and tasty ice cream. And, Splash is located at the pool and has delicious salads, sandwiches, cocktails, and sweet treats.

VUE serves breakfast and dinner. Guests can also enjoy cocktails and Mediterranean shared plates at Bar Traza. The restaurants offer kids menus with standard options, so even picky eaters can find something they will actually eat.

We had dinner at VUE one night and requested to sit next to the TV so we could watch our playoff game. They were super accommodating and had plenty of seats that could see the TVs.

Breakfast Costs

Daily cooked-to-order breakfast available 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM for a fee: USD 35 to 59 for adults and USD 15 to 24 for children. Along with 42 treatment rooms, the spa boasts three salt rooms, Mind-Sync chairs and LightStim LED therapy beds, plus locker rooms and relaxation lounges.

Since the spa is part of La Costa’s reason for being, don’t miss it. Facilities are lovely, with an extensive menu of services plus a reflexology pathway, sauna, steam room, waterfall shower, hot tub and other soothing respites. At The Spa at La Costa, guests are invited to indulge in one of the many spa services ranging from massages to skin care and multiple salon services including hair, nails, aromatherapy, and group packages. The Spa prides itself on using organic ingredients and sustainable products.

Be sure to experience the rejuvenating red light therapy at the spa, known for its benefits in skin revitalization and overall wellness. I particularly enjoyed my time in the tranquil salt room, where the air was infused with therapeutic minerals, creating a deeply relaxing and detoxifying experience. The red light therapy sessions were also a highlight, leaving my skin feeling refreshed and my body invigorated. And without a doubt, the massage I received was one of the best I’ve ever had, a truly blissful and tension-melting experience that left me feeling completely renewed.

Golf for All Levels

Named a Gold Medal Resort by Golf Magazine for several consecutive years, Omni La Costa boasts two 18-hole courses, including the only course in California designed by Dick Wilson. The golf resort offers 36 holes of golf at their Champions Course and Legends Course, and the Champions Course has won awards from both Golf Digest and Golfweek magazines. Both courses cater to family golf outings and offer resort perks like free play, lessons, and complimentary TaylorMade club rentals for children 15 and younger with paying adults.

Tennis and Pickleball

Omni La Costa Resort offers a world-class tennis program overseen by Tennis Hall of Famer, Cliff Drysdale. They provide daily tennis instruction, clinics, and camps as well as private or group lessons. They also offer pickleball lessons and play time. There are 17 hard and clay tennis courts, seven of which are lighted for weekly tennis nights. Sadly, during our visit you couldn’t play after dusk, so we never had the chance to play pickleball.

Keep in mind there is a daily resort fee, and it covers Wi-Fi access, Athletic Club access, and more, though there are fees for other on-site activities, including the kids club. The resort fee is mandatory and adds to your nightly rate whether you use the included amenities or not.

Beyond the resort fee, you will pay separately for Kidtopia, spa treatments, golf rounds, tennis lessons, and valet parking. There is a one-time non-refundable pet fee of $75 per reservation for up to 2 pets if you bring your dog.

Up to 4 children 17 years old and younger stay free when using existing bedding. This is genuinely helpful for families because you do not pay extra per child as long as they fit in the existing beds. Rollaway/extra beds are available for USD 45.0 per night if you need additional sleeping space.
